Well it got past the booting application but I never got to a prompt.
Basically, I get a white screen with a line saying something about the
system table and then it fills the screen with those strange vertical
lines.  The IIci then freezes and I have to hard restart it.

Nope.  I tried setting both the Monitors control panel and the Options to
black and white but nothing changes except that the vertical lines are
just B&W now instead of color.  I still get the weird vertical lines after
the line about the system table.  And I still freeze and have to force
restart the computer.

Anyone including Colin have any ideas for me?

BTW, I didn't have any problems in any of the previous steps
(formatting, partitioning, mkfs, installing, etc.).
