The fact that the "folder" /var/mail/root doesn't exist is probably
because root hasn't gotten any mail. If you booted into single user I
think that's normal. I quoted "folder" because it's pine speak, in Un*x
speak a pine folder is simply a file. I bring it up 'cause it got me
confused at one point (I thought a folder was a dir). I have:
spock>ls -lF /var/mail
total 0
-rw------- 1 guest vanilla 0 Feb 10 19:40 guest
-rw------- 1 johanc wheel 0 Feb 9 00:34 johanc
-rw------- 1 root wheel 0 Feb 16 22:50 root
The Way Of The Forefathers is to forward root's mail to the admin by
editing /etc/aliases; just add a line like:
# Well-known aliases -- these should be filled in!
root: johanc
If you're using pine3.91 make sure it's the patched version that can read
~/.pinerc or get the 3.95 binaries from:
ftp://fusion.kth.se/pub/johanc/outgoing/
Hope this helps,
/Johan
