I think Apple's tech pages said that 512K is the point where you hit the wall of the law of diminishing returns, that is not enough performance boost to make up for lost RAM if you go past that, and even to only go to 512K if you have RAM to spare.  Otherwise, choose a number somewhere between 128K and 512K.
