Thinking about it, I'd expect the other end would tell your pppd that the
connection was going down.

??? What does the modem book say the FC light going off means? If it means
the modem has asked the mac to stop, FTP HAD BETTER STOP. IMMEDIATELY.
And it will, with crtscts set and a correct modem cable.

What does ftp do to indicate it's still sending data? Is it still printing
hash marks? Because if the modem tells the mac to hush, I'd expect the
io lights to keep going. I think they mean IO on the modem side, while
the modem's emptying the buffer.
