If the problem is disconnections because the modem is seeing DTR transitions
and hanging up, another option is to just use crtscts. Then DTR won't
get twiddled for flow control.

I talk to a 14.4 modem at 38400 on a IIsi using the NCR driver, and I don't
get overruns. So it can work.
