ok using these scripts from synapse, i then typed 'pppd' at the command 
prompt, this generated:
pork% pppd
pork% Apr  2 11:28:35 myname pppd[135]: pppd 2.3.0 started by root, uid 0
Apr  2 11:28:36 myname pppd[135]: Connect script failed
Apr  2 11:28:36 myname pppd[135]: Connect script failed
Apr  2 11:28:38 myname pppd[135]: unable to delete pid file: Is a directory

do i have to specify the script? i left most of the wrstuden scripts in 
the /etc/ppp directory too...i dont know if thatr wo7uld mess it up or not.
