Is there any reason the Installer's cpin and cpout commands can't be 
used?  They seem to be designed to copy files into and out of the BSD 
filesystem and don't need the files to be in tar or gzip format first.  
I've never had any problems with them other than having to deal with the 
File Type and Creator and UNIX LFs in the files on the MacOS side.  
FileTyper and Edit-II seem to handle these problems on MacOS pretty well 
though.
