NetBSD/i386 similarly mis-diagnoses at least some "real x86"
platforms.  I think it's Compaq servers that have it happen often;
some company's servers, but i forget which.  (If you look in the list
archives -- oh for a list search engine supported on the NetBSD web
pages, and no, don't bother pointing me to third-party engines -- I'm
pretty sure you'll find not-too-infrequent misdiagnoses of these
problems.)

The code in question simply isn't robust enough (and maybe should use
the bios, as the comments suggest).
