I think the idea of doing it all in software, which dated to the late
70's and the Apple II, still held firm. Unfortunately.

The IIfx had special I/O Processors, which either did DMA, or did
everything, then called the CPU to just do a block transfer. The Q900 &
Q950 used them also. The AV macs, the Q660 and Q840, were the first with
real DMA (which is VERY similar to, or shall we say copied by, the
PowerMac DMA ;-) .
