There are several web pages out there that appear to be excerpts from a
book or other large work, and one of them is a brief but useful
description of PAP and its workings.  One such page is

As someone mentioned, you do need to know what your ISP is prompting with,
but you probably can view that by dialing in with ZTerm or some such on
the MacOS side.  Once you know what to "wait" for, the aforementioned web
page should give you an idea of how to arrange what you want to "send".
This page, and not much else, helped me figure out PAP.
