It's a good idea to make sure you have the partition mounted read-only when
you run fsck. It does sound like your problem is more serious than that,
so I would try Bill S's suggestion of using a SBC kernel.
FYI there are three SCSI drivers around: the current incarnation of the
original driver, which I use, the SBC driver done by the current
portmaster, and another driver used by the Quadra ports with a different
SCSI chip. Each of the first two fails on some configurations and is rock
solid on others for reasons no one understands. The third driver seems to
avoid such problems, but probably doesn't have enough use yet to say for
sure.
