Because that's standard across m68k ports, some of which (most of which,
probably), are not booting from an OS. We have tried to limit our
dependence on information being passed in from the booter/macos.

Ummm... Because the booter is still basically an application hacked
together by unix geeks in a day or two in order to try and boot a kernel
that they'd managed to get to link under A/UX... ;-)
It's really been needing a re-write for several years...
