OK, to recap... I downloaded Allen's new esp kernel. It worked fine for me
through a couple boots. I was using quite old binaries, so things like ps
wouldn't work. I downloaded then-current tarballs, ALL 7 of them. I
downloaded the 1.1e installer & installed all of the tarballs. I then had
trouble with a boot, so I decided to try downloading the current GEN (35)
that went with the  binaries. This too gave the same error upon boot. I
even tried booting with my old trusty GEN-17. That booted me just after the
PRAM_time not matching or something like that. If all else fails, I can
reinstall 1.2.1 binaries with my GEN-17 kernel, which was my setup prior to
this, which ran flawlessly for 1/2 year without so much as a required fsck.
