If this is of any interest to anyone, I played around a bit, and found that
pppd 2.3.1 works perfectly well if it's coupled with the chat that came
with pppd 2.30b5. So, it would seem to me that the problem lies solely with
chat, and not with pppd. Of course, I don't keep the full source around, so
I'm not sure, but this is how things seem to act.
