btw, this is a pretty good indication that you did not boot in 1-bit (i.e
black and white) mode.  you should do this or you might run into problems
later.

i think you must've looked at the wrong sheet.  the current machine-status
document is for netbsd-current (which is more or less netbsd 1.3_alpha at
the moment).  if you look at the netbsd/mac68k 1.2 page, you'll note that
the '040-based macs are _not_ supported by 1.2 (or 1.2.1).

please download the stuff from

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.3_ALPHA/mac68k/

instead of the 1.2.1 stuff.  don't worry, you'll only have to reinstall
once more :-)

the 1.3_alpha kernel (GENERIC#48?) should boot your machine just fine.
let us know if you have any problems with it.
