Thanks for the emails and news responses. I appreciate the attention to
the problem.
It seems that the majority believes that an OS upgrade to 7.1 will
do the trick, so I'm going to take that step. My only issue with that plan
is that my SE/30 boots NetBSD 1.3 Beta from 7.0 w/Tuneup without
difficulty. Same install, same binaries, same kernel, same booter, but
different machine. Is it likely that the same MacOS system calls that are
failing on the LC are working successfully on the SE/30? Bob Nestor
suggested that possibly the PRAM battery backup was dead and the 32-bit
settings were not being saved past reboot. Would the installer allow me to
start it if this were the case, or is it fooled by some retained value in
the OS, when in actuality the hardware is in 24-bit mode? I would think
this would be probed at bootup (perhaps that was a post 7.0.1 feature.)
What's the consensus on this?
