I discovered this one, too, after compiling the new color Xserver. The
problem is that the new Xserver uses a different keymapping from the old
one, and the old one had a problem with the up and down arrow keys.
Because of this, many people (you as well, probably) were using a
.Xmodmaprc file to correct the keymapping. The new Xserver doesn't have
this problem, so if you simply remove your .xmodmap file (or the relevant
lines from it), it should work just fine.
I hope this fixes it. Let me know if it doesn't.
