libz is part of the NetBSD binary distribution, as of at least 1.3_ALPHA
(it may not have been part of previous versions).

If you have the version of X that needs libz, then you have the version
of X that needs NetBSD 1.3 - 1.2 or 1.2.1 just won't work.

So, go to your nearest ftp mirror and download either the 1.3 snapshot
or the old version of X!
