Is your machine connected to another machine via LAN or only
serial line (eg. modem)?

It deends on the network topology.  But the answer may be
`No.'

I'm using a couple of machines w/ Ethernet in my room and
one is connected to internet via dialup PPP and run neither
routed nor gated, without problem.  Static routing works
well enough for me.
