I made almost _no_ changes to your code (I believe I removed the SE/30
mmap bugfix since I seem to remember Scott saying the root cause had been
fixed in the kernel).  So, it should work pretty much the same way.

I don't think there is even method to determine the current color depth,
but I could be wrong.
