I reduced modem port speed from 57,600 to 38,400 bps ( in 
/etc/ppp/options ).  The zstty0: ring overrun errors completely 
disappeared.  Thanks.  Incidently, the CPU is a Performa 600.  I haven't 
measured any performance numbers, but Bill Studenmund tells me that 
performance is probably improved.  I believe it.
