I've got a question concerning X-windows that I hope somebody might be able
to help me with.
I just re-installed MacBSD (from the 1.3 download) onto an SE/30. I tried
running "startx" but got an error. I added the /etc/ld.so.conf file then
restarted.
It looked like X was starting, then something flashed on the screen, too
quick to read, and then the message
"X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)."
I checked the FAQ and read the following, which seems to imply that I need
a different server for the SE/30, but only for 1.2.1. I would have thought
that for 1.3 I wouldn't need this. does anybody know?

If you have an SE/30, you will want to get the following X server binary
instead:
ftp://ftp.macbsd.com/pub/NetBSD/X/Xmacbsd-960127.tar.gz
(NOTE: The special server for the SE/30 was a result of a problems with
the SE/30's frame buffer initialization. The 1.2 distribution X server
will not work with the SE/30, but the January one will.)
The distribution X server (and the January server for the SE/30) are
monochrome servers. In order to use them, your machine must be in 1-bit
(i.e. B&W) mode before booting NetBSD. Several newer X servers that
provide additional features do exist, however. See the following answers
for more information on them since you will probably want to run one of
them instead of the stock server.
