You need to login as root initially.  Just hit return when it asks you for
a password.  BTW, you can only login as root in multi-user mode.  In
single-user, you _are_ root, but the filesystem is read-only.

Not at all.  That sounds like you booted multi-user.  Unless you have
messed with the passwd files, root's initial password is empty.
