In my /.cshrc file, at the end I have:

if ($?prompt) then
        set prompt="`hostname -s`# "
endif

This changes the prompt.  Note that root has /bin/csh as the
shell on my machine.  

If you use sh instead, you may need to check the /.profile (?)
