I'm not running named. Perhaps I should have noted that I am POPping and
telnetting from a machine on a private IP-NATted net (behind the NetBSD
box with IPFilter). Machines on the private net are entered in
/etc/hosts, and /etc/resolv.conf points to the nameservers on the campus
network. This setup was excellent and problem-free for months, until
very recently... I've also noticed that when these long delays occur,
the serial console (the NetBSD box is headless) gets filled with funny
characters like "qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" and the like.

Pretty funky, eh? ;)
