I'm assuming you already tried a head-cleaning disk with no luck, right? 
Are you sure it's the drive and not the disks?  Are you able to format new
disks, or is the problem a massive enough flakiness that you can't do much
of anything?  Just curious.

Probably both.  I recall a marked improvement in stability when I dumped
7.0.1 on my PB145.  Still not stable, but better.
