I was at Apple when the OpenTransport API (AT&T XTI) was chosen by a
marketroid. It was supposedly to make it easy to port all the UNIX network
applications written to that API ... except that they weren't any.
Everything worth having was written for BSD sockets. Everyone complained,
but Apple didn't listen.

What's even funnier is that UNIX APIs and MacOS APIs have different
requirements: UNIX is an asynchronos OS with a synchronos (blocking)
programming model, and MacOS is the exact opposite. So, of course, the API
has to change to fit, and is no longer standard...
