You want to make the drives you don't use under NetBSD idle until the
next boot time, or you want to make any drives idle when they are not
being accessed?  If you mean the latter, I doubt putting them into
idle will benefit anything.  For one thing, update daemon syncs
(flushes unwritten data in the buffers to the drives) once every 30
seconds.

I'm sure the temperature is well within the specs.  My drives, too,
get very hot (especially my oldest drive, the 1080M Fujitsu M2694ES; I
think I could make fried eggs if I placed a piece of aluminum foil on
top of it).
