I didn't have any problem getting lynx to compile on my mac. Just
took a while.

I used to have Mosaic, too, but I can't remember if I got it as
a binary package or if I compiled it.

Mosaic is at least graphical, unlike lynx, but it kinda sucks. It
doesn't handle a lot of things very well, such as tables and frames.
A lot of times, that doesn't matter. Sometimes it does.

I'm not running mozilla on my mac, because that would just be
incredibly slow, but I can't see why there would be a problem
with it, especially if you got it as a binary package. I don't
like to use packages, especially if I don't know where they came
from, but if you want a fully-functional browser, that's what I'd
recommend.

Other possibilities:
 * get the SunOS4 distribution of netscape 3.x and install the appropriate
libraries from SunOS 4.1.1 if you have access to the media or an account
on an old sun3 machine somewhere

 * arena is a decent browser, which handles most things, but I don't
like the way it's laid out.

 * chimera is another browser, which I find similar to arena. I haven't
looked at it for a long long time, though.

Both chimera and arena should compile on your mac with little or no
hassle, as long as you have the libraries they want (jpeg and gif
libraries, among others).
