I *highly* recommend having a DNS entry added to the nameserver that
services your network.  I don't know about other schools, but here we
have no problems at all adding individual's hosts which reside on our
network to our DNS database (in fact, we don't give out IP addresses
unless it is registered in DNS).  Unless the admins are BOFH (see, eg, 
http://vms.arizona.edu/~chd/bofh/bofh-index.html :) ), this shouldn't
be a problem...
