Hmmmm. I suspect that we have been talking past each other, due to my
(very) slight acquaintance with the way NetBSD is organized. Do I
understand you to mean that:

1. gnusrc.tgz is present only to provide support for the compiling of NetBSD

2. gnusrc.tgz (expanded, of course) is installed as a part of the
compilation of NetBSD

If so, small wonder that I have not had much luck at installing the
individual parts!
