Use "cdtrcts" instead which uses the Mac's HSKO handshake line for flow
control ("RTS" signal) instead of line control ("DTR" signal). To make this
work, you need a "hardtware handshake" cable, and you need to make the
modem ignore the input from its DTR pin (usually "AT&D0" for Hayes
compatible modems).

This is probably too much for a start. Try 38k4 or 57k6, depending on your
hardware.
And, if the other side uses a unixoid pppd, disable modem compression and
use pppd's compression -- it is way easier on your machine tahn interrupt
rates of >5k/sec.
