If you don't want to mess around sendmail.cf, try
mail.local(/usr/libexec/mail.local) as MDA, instead of sendmail to put
your mails into /var/mail/$USER with fetchmail like following.

$ fetchmail -p POP3 -m "/usr/libexec/mail.local YOUR-LOCAL-USER-NAME"
YOUR-POP-SERVER
