FIXED!  I changed the last line to my pseudo fqdn and now it works.
192.168.0.3	max.surfside.net

Surfside is my isp, and I'd set my hostname to that.
I guess sup was looking for my full fqdn in the hosts lookup.

Now it sees what it was lookin' for.
