That sounds like the default session manager, "xsm", on a small
screen. The "startx" script doesn't invoke a session manager by
default. You might like a different window manager better. Afterstep,
fvm, fvm2 all supply a virtual screen larger than your actual screen,
probably essential if you must run X at less than 1024x768. "wmx" is
very nice, and simple enough to run well on a mac68k box, but no
virtual screen.

You can invoke your chosen window manager, after installing it, by
adding "exec wmx", "exec afterstep", as required, to the end of your
~/.xsession file (or create one, if it doesn't exist).
