A call to ldd revealed that my addition of "-static" to the CFLAGS did no
good. The problem was that the executeables were still dynamically
linked. I copied over the shared libs and did an ldconfig.

All is working great now. Anyone interested in doing this let me know and
I can point you toward some nice FAQs (for linux) and then give you some
info on adapting them to NetBSD.
