Hmmm...
The tar command will unpack the .tgz file and save it with the
original owner and permissions. I usually use the 'o' option instead
of 'p' as an ordinary user and build the package before becoming root
for the install. That way I have a chance of seeing if there is
something funny before it becomes part of the system.
pkg_add will only work if the .tgz file is a pre-built binary package
for the same architecture of NetBSD. The normal non-NetBSD source
distribution files will not work. I don't think it even works if
it's a pkgsource file, though they aren't distributed separately.
