Do you have localtalk turned on under MacOS? When Localtalk starts up or
shuts down the port, it'll spew out some incomprehensable garbage for a few
lines (at 230kbps, no less), which isn't actually incomprehensable to
another localtalk device, but doesn't make much sense when it shows up in a
terminal window at the wrong speed. :)
