Thanks. Yep I've had lots of experience with FreeBSD and Solaris and 
so am pretty familiar with the rc.conf's of the world :-). Though I 
didn't know about mount -a.

I'll log a pr when I get it all up. I decided to reinstall to 
overcome the strangeness of the unwritable filesystem, but of course 
this wasn't necessary. Doh!
