Just wanted to follow up with some more info:

The sd0(esp0:0:0): error (Peripheral Device Write Fault) is happening A LOT.
I assume this has something to do with the ESP changes that I have been
reading about.

Does this kernel perhaps not have any of these patches, and is there one I
should be using instead?
