Oops! I forgot:

> config kernelconfigfilename
> cd ../compile/kernelconfigfilename

make depend		<- important!

> make

I also forgot to mention that you need to make sure that the line:

options         DISABLE_EXT_CACHE

is commented out. I don't know if it is by default in 1.4.2.
