Have you considered getting a real 68040 for your PB? If the LC040 is in a
socket, then the only thing you have to do is to pull the LC040 out and
plug the 040 in. I did this with my Performa 475, and it's run fine ever
since.
Going back to other Mac models with an 68030-CPU and 68882-FPU will
definitely give you worse performance, for example my old Performa 475
(040/33MHz) is about twice to four times as fast as my really old Performa
450 (030/882/33MHz).
Maybe performance won't matter that much for everyday work, but as soon as
you have to do really nasty things, a 030/882 will get you nowhere. Just to
give an example: gcc-2.95.3 took about twelve hours to compile on the
040-machine.
