OK, this is weird. I've had a login window open since I sent my
original post. I got yours, and went back to the window and just
typed top to verify I still had the problem -- but I didn't! This
problem has afflicted this machine for a -week- and I only rebooted
it right before I sent my original message. Now, the issue has
mysteriously cleared up. And of course everything now looks good via
top etc.
Now I've waited a couple of minutes and the problem is back again!
I have tried logging on right after the machine boots, but with no
luck. OK, I'm off to hook up a monitor and log on as root. Not sure
that will make a difference, though.
