I thought they were the same thing. I have a 636CD that still has a
NetBSD-1.3.2 partition on it, though I don't run it in NetBSD often.
I did swap the chip for a full 68040.

Don't ever try to run a userland that's newer than the kernel.
What you might try to do, is to boot the install kernel from the elf
snapshot to see how well it groks the IDE disk.

I don't think so. The partitioning scheme for *86 PC's is very
different than for Mac's.

Yes. Then download unpack the Booter, copy the gzipped
netbsd-INSTALL.gz kernel into the Booter folder, and select that file
to boot from. There are still bugs in sysinstall, but it does have the
capability to create partitions as long as it recognizes the disk. The
worse that can happen is that it wipes out the Mac OS installation you
will have just made.

Hard to say. If you can identify bugs in the snapshot, those might get
fixed for 1.6. To be honest, it would make more sense to get an
installation up and running on a small SCSI drive in order to play
with the experimental IDE support. You're really reaching, expecting
to do a virgin install on IDE. Lotsa Luck!
