I contacted NEC via their web site, and after a couple of days, got a
message back that the part was discontinued, and the data sheet was only
available in Japanese.  I told them that there were people who spoke
Japanese working on the project and asked for one, and they got back to me
with it a few days later (while I was on vacation last week).

It looks like I only got one of the two attachments (the smaller of the
two, a 5 meg PDF).  If it turns out that it doesn't contain enough info,
drop me a note and I'll see what I can do about getting the second one.

Oh, it looks like it contains source code for a driver, but the comments
are, of course, also in Japanese.  :-)
