In your /etc/mk.conf file, try adding the following:

PKGSRC_COMPILER="gcc.mk"

I found that I was able to compile once I added that - why it helps, I'm
not sure, but the .mk file says that this is the default, even though it
would appear that one of the other options is actually the default now.
