Thanks!  Yes, the default for the Q700 is 512 KB, and I have installed 
2 MB which is the maximum.  Something seems to be wrong with the 
colormap, I think (but I really know very little about this stuff, and 
the X man pages haven't been helpful to me yet- maybe I've not read the 
right one).
