I think you can also start first the window manager and then wait for
it using the wait(1) built-in command of sh(1) to do that.
In example:

blackbox & #start the window manager
pid=$! #get the PID of the wm
aterm & #start aterm after the wm
wait $pid #wait for the wm to start
exit $? #return the status
