And that's during ssh user auth, well before your shell startup files
run.  I'm leaning towards your "touch the disk => hang" theory now,
since user auth generally has to poke at the user's ~/.ssh/.

I hope it does - not because I want you to have problems, but because I
hate to see bugs go unfixed because they can't be reproduced repeatably
enough.
