Heh, I found I have this in my config:

makeoptions     COPTS="-m68040 -O2 -pipe"

Probably the COPTS+= does not do what you intended, depending on the order
of definitions and checks it may totaly override the default and drop -O2,
which then makes gcc create very different code.
